Granted the Purple Plaque award for innovation, Prof. Grunwald’s’ pioneering work at the University of Dundee and with World Interventional Stroke Therapy (WIST) organization is changing how doctors are trained. Read about these remarkable contributions and their global impact.
Professor Iris Grunwald, a global leader in interventional stroke treatment training, has been awarded the prestigious Purple Plaque Women in Innovation Award by Innovate UK. The award recognizes her groundbreaking work in establishing cross-specialty training for mechanical thrombectomy – a lifesaving procedure for acute stroke treatment—at the Image Guided Training Research Facility (IGTRF), University of Dundee, and with the World Federation for Interventional Stroke Treatment (WIST).
A central component of this revolutionary training has been the ANGIO Mentor — Surgical Science’s endovascular simulator that has played a crucial role in training and certifying doctors from multiple specialties in line with WIST guidelines.
“The ANGIO Mentor by Surgical Science has been fundamental to our success in training and certifying doctors,” said Prof. Grunwald. “Its highly realistic haptic feedback, ability to simulate real-life and emergency scenarios and complications, and its adaptability for cross-specialty training have been essential in equipping clinicians with the necessary skills to perform mechanical thrombectomy and carotid stenting. Combined with our unique perfused human cadaveric model at IGTRF – developed in collaboration with the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification (CAHID) – the result is the most life-like training environment in the world. This approach has ultimately enabled thousands of patients globally to receive lifesaving treatment.”
Surgical Science has been a steadfast supporter of WIST since 2015, contributing to its mission of advancing stroke intervention education.
Professor Grunwald’s extensive contributions have led to the establishment of WIST certified interventional stroke treatment centers and services worldwide, helping to build capacity in regions where such expertise was previously lacking.
The Purple Plaque was presented by Ms. Janet Geddes, Deputy Director, Global Innovate UK, at a special ceremony held at the University of Dundee, celebrating Professor Grunwald’s dedication to innovation and medical education.
