Florida Sportsman member SpaceboundFisher recently started fly fishing again and was wondering: What's the best way to manage fly line in the boat? Flyline stripping baskets are available for this specific purpose from all the big-name manufacturers, but they can be a pricey.
Instead, a number of intuitive members came up with their own creations. FS members YanceyM, sunflower and Capt. Gregg McKee all like collapsible laundry baskets as flyline holders. A heavier version of the same basket is sold at home-and-garden stores as a collapsible lawn and garden bin. The baskets fold into any boat compartment when not in use, plus they're cheap to buy. Weigh the bottom of the basket with sinkers, rubber hose or even a wet towel.
FS member mbowers likes to use a plastic basket with line-controlling fingers at the bottom. He likes a rectangular 23-gallon-tall recycle bin and then adds some Painter's pyramids to the bottom. Rectangular seems to be easier to manage in the boat because it fits flush up against gunnels, while a round basket will always have gaps.
