Long, slender body marked with zebralike stripes of white and deep blue or black. Mouth is elongated and narrow, and equipped with razor-sharp teeth—careful!
Common at 10-50 pounds; often grows to 80 or 90 pounds; maximum potential about 150 pounds. World record 184 pounds; Florida record 139 pounds.
White meat is tasty, but rather dry. A good smoking fish. Great raw or lightly seared, sashimi-style with ponzu.
May strike a surface bait in spectacular, greyhounding fashion, but seldom jumps after being hooked. Wild fight is characterized by several sizzling runs, usually at or near the surface. One of the fastest of all gamefish.
Many wahoo are hooked on heavy tackle, incidentally to billfishing. Best choices, however, are light to medium ocean trolling outfits with lines up to 30-pound test; 50-pound isn’t too heavy for good sport with big specimens. A few have been caught by deepjigging or ocean casting with spinning and baitcasting tackle—even fly tackle on rare occasion. Most productive bait is a weighted feather or similar trolling lure, rigged in combination with a whole small baitfish or large strip. Surface trolling is sometimes effective, but deep trolling is much more likely to produce a wahoo.
Trolling; Drifting.
Offshore of all Florida coasts, especially the Keys, but far more plentiful in the Bahamas and many Caribbean Islands.
Roams the deep blue water, but anglers can find them by working dropoffs, seamounts, weedlines and other favorable feeding locations.

Wahoo
Took about 45 minutes. Had a panhandler out behind a freakin' TLD 25 spooled up with straight 40# braid. Good news is my buddy had about 500 yards on it. Fish took probably 250 on first run. Still not sure how we didn't pull the hook on a fight that long with no mono. Angler did a pretty good job€¦ rod was also pretty long and had a fairly slow action, which helped keep pressure on the fish. Oh, and the second station up top really came in really handy as well.

Palm Beach Wahoo
This past Sunday, June 2 , 2013, was the first day Ive been able to take my boat out this year due to repairs and South Florida weather. We were only supposed to be testing the boat to see how the repairs went and do some light bottom fishing. We came out the Palm Beach inlet and headed south towards the Breakers and decided to throw a couple lines out and troll till we hit our spot. Cruising at about 7 knots and in 90 ft of water, we had 2 cedar plugs out not even expecting anything to hit. About 5 minutes in, the starboard side reel starting screaming. My buddy, Ken B, grab the rod and starting fighting while i controlled the boat, brought in the other line and started taking pictures. After about 15-20 minutes, we landed a beautiful 45.1 lb wahoo with a one shot gaff to the head which killed it instantly
100lb Wahoo
My name is Amber Gray of PANAMA CITY, FL. Monday, May 20th I was fishing 40 miles out of the St. Andrews Pass here in Panama City with my boyfriend Harris Scruggs. We trolled for about 2 hours and only had one hit that unfortunately broke off. Around 10 AM a fish hit the Shimano TLD 30 with 30 lb Mano. I must say I love the sound of a reel going off when a fish hits. By the sound of this fish hitting we both knew it was something big. Unlike the other Wahoo I have caught and witnessed others catching, this one dove straight down taking about 500 yards of line (leaving us with not much left). I thought surely it was a tuna. My heart was pounding as my only thought was I have to get this fish in the boat, I cant let him break off. I tried my very best to keep the slack out of the line and reel exactly how and when I was told to. After 30 minutes or so I began to become tired and Harris had to take over. I have to say my boyfriend is such a great sport. As an inexperienced salt water angler he allowed me to fight the fish for most of the hour while also coaching me through driving the boat whenever I needed a break. After fighting the fish for nearly an hour we were able to get him in the boat and head home. This fight would have been impossible to do with out the help Harris. What an extraordinary experience to catch a Wahoo weighing in at 97 lbs.
